Description
2017 release. Matt Mondanile's sixth full-length album as Ducktails, Jersey Devil, is a mature, multi-faceted work that showcases the New Jersey musician's return to his DIY roots. Drawing inspiration from diverse sources, including the cosmic jazz fusion of Haruomi Hosono, the album is a huge leap forward in songwriting and production. It is also a testament to Mondanile's artistic perseverance and the project's true magnum opus. Jersey Devil was recorded over the span of two years despite frequently unfavorable circumstances. Mondanile started working on the record in Los Angeles prior to his departure from Real Estate, in a cramped, stuffy warehouse space he converted into a modest studio. A few good friends came to his aid. However, the music really became what Mondanile had envisioned after moving back to his hometown of Ridgewood, New Jersey, where he finished writing and recording the songs in his mom's basement. The quiet, familiar space surrounded by wood-paneled walls provided endless inspiration. Once finished tracking, Mondanile would take the commuter train to Hoboken, grab a cup of coffee from Dunkin' Donuts, and mix the album with engineer Ernie Indradat at Sonic Youth's studio.

It's odd to be the first customer to review an album. I fear my writing can't do this album justice, but I also feel compelled to write more than simply that it's a great album, since I can't rely on specifics that have already been written. I'm a long-time fan of Real Estate and discovered Matt's solo work a few years ago. For me, this is his most cohesive and beautiful work to date. Every time I visit Hawaii, I make a playlist of songs my wife and I can listen to, to help capture the moment in our minds, long after the vacation ends. Map to the Stars, Solitary Star and The Rising Sun will all make it onto our playlist (and maybe more). If you like music that makes you feel good, happy, peaceful--the kind of stuff you might listen to on a perfect starry night, sharing it with someone you love--then this album may be for you. I wish Matt whatever measure of success and experience that enables him to continue down this path, without compromising his integrity, heart and creativity.**Update 3/13/18Well... I just read about Matt's personal life and the troubles he's had with women over the past several years, none of which I knew about until today (I don't spend much time reviewing news/social media that would have made me aware earlier). While my evaluation of the music and lyrics continues to stand, largely based on my own personal experience and subjective interpretation of the album, without the context of Matt's personal life, I also want to express my disappointment. I don't condone or support the behavior of which Matt has been accused, but I am also generally troubled that we live in a society that both decries illicit behavior towards women in real life and celebrates and defends the teaching and demonstration of it in media and pornography. Too many fatherless boys are being reared in this confusing world, without a good example of what it means to be a real, good man. As a society, we're now reaping what we've supported, condoned, and allowed ourselves to become. I hope Matt can get all the help and support he needs, that he can find happiness and fulfillment through a healthy relationship with a woman he loves, that he can find forgiveness for his past, and that his talent and true heart can still be shared with us in future albums.
